GCR names Bates White on list of top economic firms for 14th consecutive year

December 12, 2022

For the 14th year in a row, Global Competition Review (GCR) named Bates White to the “GCR 100: Economics” list. Being named on the list indicates that a firm is among the world’s leading antitrust economics consultancies and has advised clients on some of the most complicated competition matters in the world.

GCR highlighted several merger matters from 2022, including Cory Capps and Leemore Dafny’s work for merging parties Beaumont Health and Spectrum Health, which the Federal Trade Commission approved; George Rozanski and Arun Sharma’s work advising Centene on its acquisition of Magellan Health; and two successful cases on which Nicholas Hill worked—U.S. Sugar’s acquisition of Imperial Sugar and the Department of Justice’s block of Penguin Random House’s merger with Simon & Schuster.

On the litigation front, GCR highlighted Joseph Farrell’s work on behalf of a class of plaintiffs alleging that Amazon forced third-party sellers to agree to a most-favored nation provision that prohibited them from offering their products on other platforms at prices lower than what Amazon charged. GCR also summarized Michael Whinston’s work for the DOJ in Unites States v. Google, a civil antitrust suit that alleges that Google monopolized internet search and search advertising by denying competitors access to distribution channels.

This ranking is GCR’s comprehensive listing and analysis of the world’s leading economics consultancies for competition advice. The listing is based on measures including the number of dedicated antitrust economists in the firm, work over the past year, and the number of nominations to Who’s Who Legal: Competition. In 2022, 11 Bates White competition economists were named to that list: B. Douglas Bernheim, Cory Capps, Leemore Dafny, Eric Emch, Joseph Farrell, Nicholas Hill, Robert Marshall, Leslie Marx, George Rozanski, Scott Thompson, and Michael Whinston. Drs. Capps, Emch, Rozanski, and Whinston were also recognized as WWL Thought Leaders in Competition and Drs Bernheim, Farrell, and Hill were recognized as Global Elite Thought Leaders.
