May 5, 2025

Lexology Index has once again recognized Bates White Partners Andrew Evans and Charles Mullin as leading Insurance Expert Witnesses, naming them to its prestigious 2025 list. Mr. Evans was designated as a Thought Leader in the insurance field, while Dr. Mullin was selected as a Global Elite Thought Leader.

This marks the eighth consecutive year that Dr. Mullin has been recognized as a Global Elite Thought Leader in this category, an accolade earned by only seven individuals in the United States. In addition, Dr. Mullin is a three-time recipient of Lexology Index’s Insurance Expert of the Year award and has published extensively on applied and theoretical econometrics and labor economics in peer-reviewed journals.

In addition to his Lexology Index recognition, Mr. Evans was awarded Lexology’s 2025 Client Choice Award for Insurance and Reinsurance Expert Witnesses in the United States. This marks the second year in a row he was granted this respected award and Mr. Evans continues to garner high praise for his thoughtful analysis and impressive presentations at depositions, arbitrations, and hearings, according to Lexology Index. His expertise in liability valuation, financial risk assessment, and insurance allocation has made him a sought-after expert witness in complex litigation and arbitration matters.

Lexology Index’s rigorous selection process includes interviews with peers and clients, identifying the most distinguished professionals in the field. The Insurance Expert Witnesses designation highlights individuals who rank highly for their impressive work providing evidence in court and delivering the highest-quality expertise on insurance coverage and claims, loss allocation, and damages.

Recently, Mr. Evans and Dr. Mullin testified in the matter of In Re: Red River Talc, LLC, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, which filed for bankruptcy protection to resolve tort claims relating to cosmetic talc products. Bates White was engaged to evaluate whether the debtor’s proposed $9 billion Trust adequately compensated qualifying ovarian and gynecological cancer claims as well as to provide scenario analysis around the contested Plan vote. Between February 24 and February 26, Mr. Evans and Dr. Mullin testified in Houston, Texas.

Mr. Evans conducted scenario analyses of voting results to assess whether the debtor’s Prepackaged Chapter 11 Plan of Reorganization had sufficient support from claimants to meet the bankruptcy code's confirmation thresholds. He also examined voting across sub-populations of claimants.

Dr. Mullin assessed whether the Plan provided similar treatment to pending and future talc claims and testified to the ability of the Plan to pay claims in full at or above historical tort-system settlement values. The Judge described Dr. Mullin as an “incredibly credible” witness, underscoring the strength of his valuation testimony.
