Professor Robin S. Lee joins Bates White as Academic Partner in the Antitrust Practice

July 1, 2025

Bates White is pleased to announce that Robin S. Lee, PhD, Professor of Economics at Harvard University, is joining the firm as a Partner in the Antitrust and Competition Practice. Dr. Lee brings world-class expertise in industrial organization, applied microeconomic theory, and health economics, along with a proven record of landmark research and analytical rigor.

At Harvard, Dr. Lee teaches courses on industrial organization to doctoral, graduate, and undergraduate students. His academic accomplishments include being honored with the Econometric Society's Frisch Medal, which recognizes outstanding empirical or theoretical applied research in economics, and previously serving as a co-editor of American Economic Journal: Microeconomics. Dr. Lee's research spans industrial organization, applied microeconomic theory, and health economics, and it has a reputation for advancing the understanding of firm behavior and market dynamics in imperfectly competitive settings, including those involving platform and vertical markets. Dr. Lee previously served on the faculty at New York University’s Stern School of Business, is a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, and has been an academic affiliate of Bates White for the last three years.

Last year, Dr. Lee served as an expert witness in the landmark case United States et al. v. Google LLC, which has been described as one of the most significant antitrust cases in decades. Retained by the Department of Justice, Dr. Lee testified as the government’s final witness, explaining key aspects of Google’s monopolistic conduct in online advertising markets. His expert analysis on publisher ad servers and ad exchanges as relevant antitrust markets, as well as Google’s tying practices, was cited dozens of times in the court’s decision this year, underscoring the critical role he played in the case.

Dr. Lee comes to the firm with a wealth of experience across industries, having analyzed mergers and acquisitions in energy, healthcare, media, and technology markets on behalf of both merging parties and regulatory agencies. He has also provided expert consulting on topics such as health plan design and selective contracting.

Dr. Lee obtained his PhD in Business Economics, as well as his AM and AB in Economics, from Harvard University.

“We are excited to welcome Robin to our team,” said Scott Weishaar, Managing Partner at Bates White. “His deep expertise in industrial organization, his ability to bridge academic research and real-world applications, and his contributions to understanding firm behavior in imperfectly competitive markets make him particularly well-suited to provide exceptional value to our clients.”
