In June 2020, Aldrich Pump LLC and Murray Boiler LLC filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy to resolve their present and future asbestos liabilities through a proposed § 524(g) asbestos trust. The Debtors retained Charlie Mullin to estimate the value of Aldrich and Murray’s present and future asbestos-related expenditures.

After submitting an initial expert report in September 2025 and a rebuttal report in March 2026, Dr. Mullin provided expert testimony in August 2026. His testimony focused on his estimation of the Debtors’ present and future asbestos-related liabilities using the tort system extrapolation method and on rebutting opposing experts who testified on behalf of the Asbestos Claimants Committee. Dr. Mullin’s analysis covered future claim counts, resolution and payment rates, the treatment of long-pending and unknown-disease claims, average settlement values, and other case-specific valuation issues.

On September 25, 2026, Judge Lena M. James of the US Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of North Carolina issued the Phase I Order Estimating Debtors’ Aggregate Asbestos-Related Liability. The Court found Dr. Mullin’s conclusions to be “persuasive, well-reasoned, and supported by statistical and econometric principles.” Judge James repeatedly praised Dr. Mullin’s analysis and stated that it materially assisted the Court on key issues.

Dr. Mullin was supported by a team including Assaph Aharoni, Peter Cumbo, Andrew Evans, Jorge Gallardo-García, Austin Morey, and David Weiss.
