What you can expect from a case interview
Our case interviews are designed to simulate the real-world challenges we solve for clients. In 25–40 minutes, you'll tackle questions similar to:
- What happens when two medical products are bundled together?
- How does a merger between two ice cream chains affect pricing?
- What’s the impact of a cartel overcharging for digital music players?
What happens during the case
Each case interview has three main parts. Here's how to approach them:
Brainstorming
This is where the interviewer presents the scenario. Your job? Break it down, ask smart questions, and share your thoughts.
Tips for brainstorming
- Restate the question to confirm your understanding.
- Ask clarifying questions to fill in the blanks.
- Use the phrasing of the question to guide your response (e.g. "beneficial, harmful, or both").
- Always explain your reasoning - it's okay if your answer isn't perfect, as long as your thought process shines.
Calculations
Once you’ve framed the problem, you’ll move into calculations. The interviewers will typically provide numbers and ask you to estimate others as needed.
Tips for calculations
- Talk through your thought process as you set up the math.
- Don’t hesitate to make reasonable assumptions—just explain them clearly.
- Simplify the math whenever possible.
- Double-check your work to avoid common mistakes like misplacing zeroes (e.g., millions instead of thousands).
Conceptual discussion
After crunching the numbers, you’ll discuss the bigger picture. This is your chance to connect your solution to the broader concept of the case.
Tips for the discussion
- Look beyond the obvious—consider additional effects or consequences.
- Focus on how you support your answers; reasoning matters more than a “correct” answer.
