With deductibles rising and millions expected to lose coverage, states are looking at what they can do to take on medical debt.

On a recent Tradeoffs podcast, Affiliate Neale Mahoney spoke about his research on the burden of medical debt and what can be done to address it. A few takeaways include:

• The Trump administration is reversing medical debt regulation from the Biden era.
• Studies by Prof. Mahoney suggest that patients who receive debt relief earlier have greater improvements in health outcomes, compared to those who get it later.
• If hospitals automatically sign up qualified patients for financial aid, this could help keep people from going into medical debt.

Prof. Mahoney is the Trione Director of the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research, the TG Wijaya Professor of Economics at Stanford University, and the inaugural George P. Shultz Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research.
