In announcing its proposed Medicare pricing model for Part B drugs, the administration has promised to “cut down on foreign freeloading.” In this brief, Partner Richard Manning points out that the proposed plan actually does nothing to affect the prices of drugs paid by countries abroad and actually may lead those countries to further reduce the prices they pay. He notes that implementing this plan would leave people everywhere worse off over time. Although an international reference pricing regime may seem simple and effective, Dr. Manning discusses the danger lurking in it.
