Kevin Pflum was retained on behalf of the Rhode Island Attorney General (AG) to examine the likely competitive effects of the proposed merger between Lifespan and Care New England, the two largest healthcare systems and employers in Rhode Island. The parties proposed to merge and create a new academic health system affiliated with Brown University. Dr. Pflum examined the likely competitive effects of the proposed merger and assisted with the state’s investigation, conducting comprehensive theoretical and empirical analyses of the merger across several product markets. The Rhode Island AG denied the merger application, referencing Dr. Pflum’s findings. Lifespan and Care New England abandoned their merger attempt.
