Matthew E. Raiff, Ph.D.

Partner

Matthew E. Raiff is a founding member of Bates White, LLC. He oversees numerous matters for some of the firm’s largest clients, including E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company, Crowell & Moring LLP, and Dickstein Shapiro LLP.

Dr. Raiff serves as an expert economic consultant on matters primarily involving alleged anticompetitive conduct. With significant experience both in defense and plaintiff matters, he specializes in partnering with clients to resolve civil exposure for both class and opt-out litigation in direct and indirect cartel matters, devising settlement strategies, and assisting with government investigations. In the historic antitrust case, In re Vitamins Antitrust Litigation, he served as the lead consulting economist during all phases of the litigation. Dr. Raiff has published on various topics related to auctions, procurements, and collusion.

Under Dr. Raiff’s leadership, Bates White has expanded the depth and breadth of its Antitrust Practice to include significant merger and monopolization engagements. In addition, Dr. Raiff has guided the development of the annual Bates White Antitrust Conference, bringing together leading members of the academic community to share research relevant to antitrust in the areas of econometrics, industrial organization, and microeconomic theory. Dr. Raiff has also played a key role in expanding the firm’s team of noted economists and academic affiliates, and he has been instrumental in creating an exclusive partnership with the European School of Management and Technology (ESMT). Bates White and ESMT Competition Analysis, ESMT’s subsidiary consulting firm, work together to provide consulting services on matters arising from mergers and other antitrust issues within the United States and Europe.

Prior to joining Bates White, Dr. Raiff served as an Associate at A.T. Kearney. He was also a Postdoctoral Economist at The Pennsylvania State University and an Instructor in the Department of Economics at Duke University.
