MATTHEW E. RAIFF, PhD

Matthew E. Raiff is a founding member of Bates White, LLC. He has significant experience in the application of economic and statistical analysis to antitrust issues. Dr. Raiff serves as a testifying and consulting expert on matters involving alleged anticompetitive conduct. He has extensive experience working with defendants and plaintiffs in cartel matters and has played a critical role in almost every major international cartel matter over the past 15 years. Dr. Raiff also provides analysis in cases involving economic issues at the intersection of intellectual property and antitrust law. His recent work in this area includes patent infringement, antitrust counterclaims, and licensing disputes.

Prior to joining Bates White, Dr. Raiff served as an Associate of A.T. Kearney. He was also a Postdoctoral Economist at The Pennsylvania State University and an Instructor in the Department of Economics at Duke University.

Selected Experience

  • Serving as a testifying expert in In re Urethanes Antitrust Litigation. Performing economic analyses to assess damages in connection with antitrust claims on behalf of a large coalition of opt-out plaintiffs. The case is scheduled to go to trial in late 2012.
  • Serving as the lead consulting expert in In re Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) Antitrust Litigation. Advising on overall case strategy and performing economic analyses to assess liability and damages.
  • On behalf of a Fortune 100 company, providing economic analysis in connection with patent infringement, antitrust counterclaims, and alleged breach of a licensing agreement in the agricultural biotechnology industry.
  • Providing consulting services in conjunction with E.CA Economics in a chemical industry price-fixing matter filed in Europe. Advising on overall case strategy and performing economic analyses to assess damages.
  • Providing economic analysis for a client defending allegations of price-fixing in the chemicals industry.
  • Served as the lead consulting expert for defendants in In re Polyester Staple Fiber (PSF) Antitrust Litigation, In re Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) Antitrust Litigation, and In re Polychloroprene (PCP) Antitrust Litigation. Advised on overall case strategy and performed economic analyses to assess liability and damages.
  • Served as one of the lead consulting experts for a large opt-out plaintiff group in In re Vitamins Antitrust Litigation. Advised on overall case strategy and performed economic analyses to assess liability and damages.
