Zsolt Macskasi, PhD

Zsolt Macskasi conducts empirical and theoretical analyses in antitrust matters including mergers, monopolization, and price-fixing. He has managed the development of complex databases used to analyze the competitive effects of these actions. Dr. Macskasi works closely with lead attorneys, testifying experts, and U.S. antitrust agency officials throughout various stages of litigation, including case strategy development and expert report production.

Prior to joining Bates White, Dr. Macskasi worked as a teaching assistant at Northwestern University, where he taught microeconomics, econometrics, and economic history. He provided forecasts on macroeconomic indicators as an economist at ABN-Amro Bank. He also worked as a research assistant at the Institute of Economics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

Selected Experience

  • Analyzed the effects of vertical restraints imposed on merchants by a leading credit card issuer. The analysis involved theoretical and empirical analysis of two-sided markets.

  • Analyzed the competitive effects of a joint venture formed by the three dominant firms in the consumer and business financial services industry. Worked directly with the lead attorney on the economic issues of the litigation strategy. Assisted expert in writing his report. Managed staff to analyze complex transactional databases.

  • Assessed the likely horizontal and vertical effects on price competition and the effects on innovation resulting from a proposed merger among leading derivatives exchanges for the Department of Justice.

  • Managed the development of complex databases related to engagements in multiple industries. Coordinated staff on reviewing documents and websites as well as collecting and organizing data from these sources.

  • Analyzed mergers reviewed by regulatory agencies across multiple industries including video rental, telecommunications, casket manufacturing and distribution, financial futures exchanges and genetically modified seeds. The applied analyses included discrete choice modeling, panel-data econometrics, and game theory.
