Michael Black specializes in antitrust applications
of microeconomics, in particular the analysis of mergers, acquisitions,
vertical and horizontal restraints, and strategic conduct. Dr.
Black has served as an expert economic consultant on a range of
antitrust matters, primarily involving merger and acquisition
investigations and litigation by the federal antitrust agencies.
His work has involved studies, antitrust investigations, and litigation
support spanning numerous industries, including the following: soft drinks;
food retailing; energy; telecommunications; agricultural commodities
and processing; sports enterprises; commercial recordings; defense
and aviation electronics; health care; and various industrial products
such as air separation gases, flat glass, paperboard products,
and paint and coatings.
Prior to joining Bates White, Dr. Black served as a Vice President at Charles
River Associates. His experience at the FTC includes serving as the Deputy Assistant Director for
Economic Policy, a Deputy Assistant Director in the Antitrust Division in the Bureau of Economics,
and a Staff Economist.
