Bates White’s third annual Antitrust Conference fosters
intellectual capital and thought leadership
WASHINGTON, D.C., June 22, 2006—Bates White, LLC, hosted its third annual
Antitrust Conference on June 12-13, 2006. The conference was co-sponsored by the
Penn State Center for the Study of Auctions, Procurements, and Competition
Policy—an academic research center within the Department of Economics at The
Pennsylvania State University.
The conference is designed to foster collaboration between Bates White and
the academic community. More than 25 economists from leading academic institutions,
including 10 Fellows of the Econometric Society, gathered at Bates White’s
Washington, D.C. office to explore the latest thinking on the economic issues
related to antitrust law. The conference included presentations by the firm’s
doctorate leadership and a poster spotlight session highlighting the expertise of
Bates White’s newer Ph.D. staff.
Bob Marshall—a partner in Bates White’s Antitrust Practice,
co-director of the Penn State Center and head of the economics department at
Penn State, and chair of the conference committee—said, “This conference
further develops and nurtures a close relationship between Bates White and academics
who are on the frontier of economics research. The sessions provide Bates White staff
as well as academic experts with unique opportunities to present and probe new
economic analyses relevant to industrial organization and antitrust economics,
with regard to both theory and measurement. The conference is also an important
component of the professional development of the Bates White staff because it
gives them a chance to present their work to, and interact with, leading
academics.”
For the first time in its three-year history, the conference included a
special session designed especially for Bates White’s clients and potential
clients. This program provided attorneys with a deeper, yet accessible, understanding
of sophisticated economic analyses employed by economic experts.
William Kovacic, Commissioner of the Federal Trade Commission, delivered the
keynote speech, “Competition Policy and Development: Perspectives from a
Foreign Advisor,” during a dinner held at the Willard Intercontinental Hotel.
