Charles L. Miller, attorney and economist, joins Bates White

WASHINGTON DC, December 3, 2008— Charles L. (Chip) Miller, Jr., JD, PhD, has joined Bates White as a Partner in the Antitrust and Environmental & Product Liability Practices. Dr. Miller’s career has spanned both economics and the law. His areas of expertise include cartels, economic damages, litigation support, and insurance-related financial analysis.

Over the course of more than 21 years practicing law, Dr. Miller specialized in developing proof of economic damages (including expert evidence), evaluating clients’ litigation exposure, analyzing insurance coverage and financing issues, and developing large-scale settlement programs. His antitrust experience includes the vitamins, methionine, linerboard, citric acid, lysine, and high fructose corn sweetener litigation. Other experience includes the Exxon Valdez oil spill litigation, securities matters (including class action litigation, enforcement actions, and investigations), insurance coverage matters, and asbestos-related arbitration and mediation proceedings.

Before joining Bates White, Dr. Miller was a partner with Dickstein Shapiro in Washington DC, where he worked from 1987 to 2008. Before becoming an attorney, he was an assistant professor at The Johns Hopkins University. In other positions, he developed mathematical and econometric software and produced macroeconomic forecasts and simulations.

Dr. Miller received his JD from the University of California, Berkeley, and his PhD and MA in economics from the University of Rochester.
