Christopher Stomberg, Bates White economist, assesses pharmaceutical
pre-patent valuation, risks, and hurdles at ACI forum
WASHINGTON, D.C., July 10, 2007—Christopher
Stomberg, Ph.D., Principal at Bates White, LLC, spoke on “Pre-Patent
Considerations: Product Development, Commercialization and Life Cycle Management”
at the American Conference Institute’s Pharma/Biotech Patent Boot Camp in New
York, N.Y., on June 21, 2007. Stomberg discussed a range of issues related to
pharmaceutical pre-patents, including the assessment of patent/product portfolios,
valuation of products, trading of intellectual property, analysis of the competitive
environment, hurdles to product development, and product lifecycle management.
Stomberg likened the analysis of a drug company’s portfolio to a financial
portfolio, however, methods for valuation differ between the two: drug companies
generally deal in intangible intellectual property; risk is not always well
defined; and markets do not necessarily provide tangible pricing information.
Stomberg examined various types of pharmaceutical portfolios and explained how to
adjust discounted cash flow to account for risks. He addressed trends in the
pharmaceutical industry and also provided examples of economic simulations to
illustrate how to evaluate the competitive environment for innovators.
Stomberg has more than 14 years of experience in commercial antitrust litigation,
econometric modeling, and quantitative economic analysis. He specializes in the
pharmaceuticals industry and in the application of statistical and analytical
techniques to antitrust and litigation matters. He also has extensive experience
in the agriculture, asbestos, chemicals, computer, security, and telecommunication
industries.
