Chris Stomberg, Bates White economist, discusses pharmaceutical bundling and price
transparency at American Conference Institute forum
WASHINGTON, D.C., May 14, 2007—Christopher Stomberg,
Ph.D., Principal at Bates White, LLC, will appear on the panel, “Antitrust Considerations in Pricing
and Distribution” at the American Conference Institute’s Pharmaceutical Antitrust conference in New
York, NY, on May 15–16, 2007. Stomberg will discuss price transparency and anticompetitive bundling in
the pharmaceutical industry.
According to Stomberg, price transparency could enhance antitrust risk for manufacturers in the
pharmaceutical industry. While proponents of price transparency argue that it gives buyers a better
negotiating position; opponents say it may lead to tacit collusion and higher prices. In his discussion,
Stomberg also focuses on economic tests for anticompetitive bundling. Discounts on products for which a
manufacturer is a sole source could be considered anticompetitive when only available as part of a bundle
containing competitive products.
Stomberg has more than 14 years of experience in commercial antitrust litigation, econometric modeling,
and quantitative economic analysis. He specializes in matters associated with the pharmaceuticals industry,
and the application of statistical and analytical techniques to antitrust and litigation matters. Stomberg
has also assisted in developing several of the custom analytical tools and techniques employed at Bates
White. He has extensive experience working in the pharmaceuticals, agriculture, asbestos, chemicals,
computer, security, and telecommunication industries.
