Cory Capps, Bates White economist, discusses hospital-related issues at iHEA 6th World Congress
WASHINGTON, D.C., June 27, 2007—Cory
Capps, Ph.D., Principal at Bates White, LLC, will participate on a panel,
“Hospitals and the Market Environment,” at the International Health
Economics Association’s 6th World Congress in Copenhagen, Denmark, on July 9,
2007. Capps will discuss the effects of changes in the U.S. health care market
(such as hospital consolidation, insurer consolidation, and the decline of
selective contracting) on pricing and output in the hospital industry.
The panel will discuss three papers:
“The Welfare Consequences of Hospital Mergers,” written by Robert Town,
Douglas Wholey, Roger Feldman, and Lawton R. Burns, examines the welfare consequences
of hospital consolidation, finding evidence that mergers have contributed to moderate
price increases.
“Hospital Financial Condition and the Quality of Patient Care,” written by
Gloria J. Bazzoli, Hsueh-Fen Chen, Mei Zhao, and Richard C. Lindrooth, examines how
demand side changes have impacted managed care plans’ ability to win price
concessions from hospitals.
“Is the Impact of Managed Care on Hospital Prices Decreasing?” written by
William D. White, David Dranove, Richard Lindrove, and Jack Zwanziger, explores the
impact of changes in hospitals’ overall financial condition on the quality of
care and finds a negative relationship between a hospital’s financial performance
and quality, although not as strong as suggested in previous research.
Capps’ research on other aspects of hospital markets will be presented in two
papers discussed by another panel titled “Competition in Hospital and Nursing
Home Markets.” The first paper, written with Allison Cuellar of Columbia
University, examines “Information Technology Adoption and Market Structure”
in hospital markets. The second paper, “The Welfare Effects of Entry and Exit of
Hospital Specialty Units,” was written with David Dranove of Northwestern
University and Richard Lindrooth of the Medical University of South Carolina. The third
paper, by David Grabowski of Harvard Medical School, explores “Ownership
Conversions and Nursing Home Performance.”
Capps has more than 10 years of experience in the analysis of competition in health
care markets, including merger and civil nonmerger investigations of hospitals,
physicians, nurses, insurers, home health agencies, and ambulatory surgery centers. He
has experience analyzing joint ventures, group purchasing organizations, price-fixing
and market allocation, and vertical foreclosure. Dr. Capps has published widely. He
held academic positions at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and at
Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.
