Dr. Halbert White invited to speak at FTC conference on oil industry merger effects

WASHINGTON, D.C., January 3, 2005—Bates White, LLC, a national economic consulting firm, announced that Dr. Halbert White, UCSD professor of economics and Bates White founder, has been invited to serve as a moderator and panelist at the FTC conference on oil industry merger effects on January 14, 2005.

Dr. White will join other economic experts to evaluate two recent studies focusing on the price effects of mergers and concentration in the U.S. petroleum industry. The first is a March 2004 case study of the effects of the recent Marathon/Ashland Corp. joint venture. The second is the May 2004 report by the Government Accountability Office that examined the effects of mergers and market concentration in the U.S. petroleum industry.

Dr. White will moderate a panel on “Robustness and Measurement Issues in Merger Event Studies and Price-Concentration Studies.” He will also serve on three other panels: “General Identification Issues in Merger Event Studies,” “Special Issues Involving Price-Concentration Estimation,” and “Implications of Current Learning for Antitrust Merger Policy in the Petroleum Industry.”
