AEI invites Dr. Charlie Mullin to present on
indemnity reallocation due to joint and several liability
WASHINGTON, D.C., April 14, 2005—Bates White today announced
that American Enterprise Institute (AEI) has invited Bates White
Partner Dr. Charlie Mullin, and University of Virginia Law School
Associate Professor Anup Malani, to present their paper on “Assessing
the Merits of Reallocation.” The conference will be held
on April 21, 2005 at AEI in Washington, D.C.
At the conference, Mullin and Malani will focus on the legal
and economic effects of indemnity reallocation, due to joint and
several liability, in the context of asbestos-related torts. They
will compare the costs of joint and several liability on defendants
and their employees, the benefits to plaintiffs, and the incentives
it creates for competition and product innovation. They will be
joined by two discussants—Jack Calfee of AEI and Francis
McGovern of Duke University. Veronique de Rugy of AEI will moderate
the group.
The American Enterprise Institute is an independent Washington-based
nonprofit public policy research organization. It is dedicated
to preserving and strengthening the foundation of freedom through
scholarly research, open debate, and publications.
