Bates White expands its graduate fellowship
program and announces research grants for undergraduate students
WASHINGTON, D.C., December 28, 2005—The Bates White Graduate
Fellowship will expand in 2006 by offering scholarship funds to
two doctoral candidates. The expanded program also establishes
the "Bates White Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU),"
an undergraduate program dedicated to funding individual research
projects for eight juniors at The Pennsylvania State University.
The Bates White Graduate Fellowship was established in 2003
to broaden career opportunities for doctoral candidates in the
field of economics. Since 2003, Bates White has awarded one fellowship
annually to a top graduate student from The Pennsylvania State
University. The 2006 program will expand to award two students
the fellowship grant, which provides a stipend for tuition and
fees for one academic year as well as a full-time summer position
at the firm’s Washington, D.C. office.
Dr. Matthew Raiff, Partner and Founding Member said, "We
are pleased with the success of our fellowship program. Each year
we have been able to select the best economics student that met
our criteria. As the past three years demonstrated, the intellectual
exchange of knowledge between our recipients and employees in
our firm has been beneficial. As a result, we are increasing our
investment in the graduate fellowship program."
Bates White is also committed to increasing access to research
funding for undergraduate students through the establishment of
the "Bates White Research Experience for Undergraduates."
The firm has partnered with The Pennsylvania State University
to fund individual research projects under the direction of the
university’s faculty. Bates White’s contributions,
along with matching funds from Penn State, will enable eight students
to apply for a scholarship which will provide $1,200 in research
grants. In addition, the recipients will be eligible to apply
for Bates White’s Summer Consultant program, a 10-week summer
internship.
"The Bates White Research Experience for Undergraduates
is a differentiating asset for our firm as research scholarships
at the undergraduate level are typically unavailable with other
consulting firms in the industry. In addition, our unique partnership
with Penn State establishes Bates White as a leading advocate
of intellectual freedom and dedicated mentoring. Our research
students will greatly benefit from the exposure to cutting-edge
analytics they will receive while working with the university’s
faculty," stated Dr. Robert Marshall, Head of the Economics
Department at The Pennsylvania State University and Partner at
Bates White. "In addition, the students will be eligible
to obtain valuable work experience and exposure to the economic
consulting environment while participating in Bates White’s
Summer Consultant program."
