Dr. Robert Marshall speaks on Internet auction-based
collusion at Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Economics
WASHINGTON, D.C., November 14, 2005—The Federal Trade Commission’s
Bureau of Economics invited Dr. Robert Marshall, Bates White Partner
and Professor of Economics at The Pennsylvania State University,
to speak at a roundtable conference on “The Economics of
Internet Auctions.” While participating as a panelist in
a session entitled, “Competition issues,” Dr. Marshall
presented on Internet auction and procurement matters focused
on bidder collusion. He discussed how Internet auction sites create
unique opportunities for collusion and recommended strategies
to encourage non-collusive behavior.
Dr. Marshall is a recognized thought leader in antitrust economics,
with particular expertise in auctions, collusion, procurements,
and applied game theory. He has published extensively in auctions
and procurement literature, especially in the area of bidder collusion.
Dr. Marshall’s work in this field has appeared in American
Economic Review, Antitrust Law Journal, Journal of Political Economy,
Quarterly Journal of Economics, and other academic journals. In
addition, Dr. Marshall is co-director of the Center
for the Study of Auctions, Procurements, and Competition Policy,
an organization sponsored by the Economics Department at The Pennsylvania
State University. The center hosts conferences and seminars designed
to facilitate interaction between individuals in academia and
decision makers in the private sector and in public policy.
The FTC’s Bureau of Economics hosts periodic conferences
and roundtables that focus on competition and consumer protection
issues. This roundtable, hosted on October 27, 2005, brought together
economists in academia and government, as well as industry professionals,
to discuss issues including competition, network efforts, fraud,
inference, and demand estimation. The speakers discussed the implications
of recent developments in antitrust policy and competition relating
to internet auctions.
