U.S. Department of Justice invited Dr. Robert
Marshall to present on cartel price announcements
WASHINGTON, D.C., October 5, 2005—Dr. Robert Marshall,
Bates White Partner and Professor of Economics at The Pennsylvania
State University, presented at a seminar for the Antitrust Division
of the U.S. Department of Justice on October 3, 2005. He discussed
cartel price announcements in the vitamins industry, and focused
on the pro-collusive effect of increased cartel detection probabilities.
Dr. Marshall is an expert on this subject, having been involved
in the historic vitamins case which remains, to date, the largest
antitrust case in history. Together with Dr. Matthew Raiff (Bates
White Partner), and Dr. Leslie Marx (Associate Professor of Economics
at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business and Chief
Economist at the FCC), Dr. Marshall wrote a paper that explores
the role of public price announcements in supporting collusive
behavior, and examines the data on public price announcements
in the vitamins industry. This paper served as the basis for his
presentation at the seminar.
The Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice hosts
an annual seminar series for its economic analysis group. The
speakers include economic scholars from leading universities and
government agencies with a substantial background and expertise
in antitrust analysis. Dr. Marshall was one of the 10 featured
speakers to participate in the Fall 2005 program.
