New econometrics volume named in recognition
of Bates White Founder Dr. Halbert White
WASHINGTON, D.C., May 26, 2004—Bates White, LLC, a national
economics consulting firm, announced that Thomas Fomby of Southern
Methodist University and R. Carter Hill of Louisiana State University
have titled their new book, Maximum Likelihood Estimation of Misspecified
Models: Twenty Years Later, in recognition of Dr. Halbert White’s
tremendous contributions in the field of econometrics.
The volume is a result of an “Advances in Econometrics”
conference held in November of 2002 at Louisiana State University
in recognition of Halbert White’s pioneering work published
in Econometrica in 1980 and 1982 on robust variance-covariance
estimation and quasi-maximum likelihood estimation. The volume
contains 11 papers on a range of related topics—from test
statistics and critical values in selectivity models to maximum
likelihood estimation with bounded symmetric errors.
Co-editors Thomas Fomby and R. Carter Hill said, “Halbert
White is one of the leading econometricians of our time. His work
in the nonparametric treatment of generalized error structures
in econometric models and in quasi-maximum likelihood estimation
has been pathbreaking in the field.” The editors decided
to recognize White's seminal work following the 20th anniversary
of White’s initial publication by dedicating a volume to
the current research on these topics and organizing an accompanying
conference.
Dr. Charles Bates, Bates White president and founder, said, “It
is an honor to work with a colleague that continually sets standards
for innovation in econometric research. Hal has been at the forefront
of econometric techniques, and Bates White employees are honored
to work with him daily.”
Dr. White is also a professor at the University of California,
San Diego.
