Energy expert Dr. Jonathan A. Lesser presents
at Northeast Public Power Association’s 2004 Annual Conference
WASHINGTON, D.C., August 18, 2004—Bates White today announced
that Dr. Jonathan A. Lesser presented “Meeting Vermont’s
Energy Needs: The Real Economics of Energy Efficiency” at
the Northeast Public Power Association’s 2004 Annual Conference
on August 17, 2004.
Dr. Lesser discussed the need to apply sound economic principles
to evaluate the potential for demand side management (DSM) resources
to meet Vermont’s future electric needs. He focused on the
appropriate economic methods to evaluate DSM’s costs and
benefits, and how proponents need to develop a more realistic
attitude toward the ability of DSM and renewable energy to meet
the state’s future electric needs. Dr. Lesser also suggested
that municipal utilities consider a new generation of modular
nuclear power plants to provide clean, baseload power, given the
environmental difficulties of coal, the high price and strained
pipeline infrastructure of natural gas, and the limitations of
renewable energy.
The Northeast Public Power Association’s 2004 Conference
covered numerous topics affecting municipal electric providers,
including New England’s rapidly changing transmission market
structure and cooperation between New England states to develop
new generation.
