On mentoring | Chris, Manager

Chris, ManagerOne of the most satisfying aspects of working at Bates White is its strong tradition of mentoring and its collegial environment. All of our top people have the qualifications to pursue academic careers but have chosen to make their marks in consulting. They have brought some of the best aspects of an academic department to this firm—from working with Senior Partner Hal White to the Summer Consultant program.

A highlight of my job is the opportunity to work with Hal. He is not only a world-renowned economist but also a great person— something I find to be a rare combination in someone of his caliber. I'm influenced by his fine character and intellectual capital, whether I hear him play jazz on his trumpet at one of our firm gatherings or I follow along while he scribbles new ideas on his yellow note pads.

Hal has taught me the value of mentoring and training as a part of our everyday course of business. He always has the time to explain things and to answer even the most uninformed questions with respect and a genuine desire to educate. This is true of all of our senior staff. Everyone at the senior level has a reputation for educating and guiding us through our career choices.

Ph.D., Economics, University of California, San Diego; M.A., Economics, George Washington University; B.A., Economics, University of Massachusetts, Amherst; Study Abroad, Scandinavian Seminar/Sweden
